The March 2011 NACTA Journal is online and available to members on the NACTAteachers.org website (http://www.nactateachers.org/journal.html). If you are a member your Username is your email address. Teaching Award of Merit
Each year, Institutional Members of NACTA, can request a Teaching Award of Merit Certificate for one faculty member to recognize their accomplishments as a teacher. Graduate students who teach, can also be recognized with a certificate. The president of NACTA signs these certificates. They are then signed by a local administrator before being presented.
To request a NACTA Teaching Award of Merit or a Graduate Student Teaching Award of Merit Certificate, complete the form on the NACTAteachers.org website and return it to the NACTA Secretary/Treasurer. Typically these are presented in the spring but they are available any time during the year.
2010 Annual Hard Copy of NACTA Journal
All individuals who were members of NACTA during 2010 should have received the 2010 NACTA Journal annual hard copy of volume 54, issues 1 - 4. If you did not please contact the NACTA Secretary. Potential Sites for Future NACTA Conferences
The NACTA Executive Committee will begin reviewing potential sites for the 2013, 2014 and 2015 national conferences during the June Executive Committee meeting. The NACTA Journal will continue to publish unsolicited book reviews from members who wish to submit their review through the NACTA Journal submission site (http://nacta.expressacademic.org/). In the "Notes" add the words "Book Review."

Writing for the NACTA Journal - Tips
This section of the E-newsletter features helpful tips on preparing a manuscript for the NACTA Journal.
This is a plea from the Editor: Please use your manuscript number when inquiring about a manuscript and when saving the final, revised manuscript for publication. Manuscript numbers are assigned by the FastTrack submission site and follow the form yyyy-xxxx where yyyy is the year and xxxx is the manuscript number.

NACTA Historian Retires
Dr. James (Jim) McKenna officially retired from Virginia Tech in July, 2010, but as his wife told him: "I'm failing at retirement." He continued in his role of department head until a new head arrives. On May 24, 2011, Dr. Tom Thompson from Texas Tech assumes the reigns of the CSES department at Virginia Tech and Jim will "really" retire. With his retirement, he is resigning as the NACTA Historian. Regarding his involvement in NACTA Jim says:
"I cannot tell you how much NACTA has meant to me over the years. Serving as an officer and Historian has been truly an act of love for me. Looking at the organization we have now compared to the one that was passed to my generation, there is just light years of progress. You all deserve accolades for the progress that has been made. I now am reaching the point where I need to pass this all on to the next generation to continue to build NACTA. In ways, retirement is a bit bittersweet. I want to thank all of you for the friendship and inspiration over the years "
Jim's first NACTA meeting was in 1993 at the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls. He has been an active member ever since. We extend our thanks to Jim for his service to NACTA and wish him the best in his "real" retirement.

Faculty Position in Agricultural Health & Safety, University of Iowa
The University of Iowa, College of Public Health invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position (Assistant or Associate Professor) in Agricultural Health & Safety.
The Department of Occupational and Environmental Health serves an important role in education, research, and outreach in the State of Iowa and the nation. The Department offers a rich environment for collaborative activities. Eighteen faculty direct or participate in an array of programs, including:
- A NIOSH-funded agricultural health research center
- A state funded agricultural health research and outreach center
- A NIOSH-funded occupational health and safety education and research center
- A CDC-funded injury prevention research center
- A NIEHS-funded environmental health sciences core center
The Position
Applications will be considered at the level of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor. The successful applicant at either rank will be expected to teach graduate-level courses and direct graduate thesis research; develop an extramurally funded research program; and contribute to the design, implementation and evaluation of outreach and education programs.
Qualifications
Applicants should have a doctoral degree (e.g. PhD, DVM, MD) in a relevant science or engineering field as well as experience in agricultural safety and health. They should clearly demonstrate potential to develop and lead a nationally prominent, externally funded research program. Applicants should have publications in the peer-reviewed literature and demonstrated teaching ability. In addition, applicants should have an academic focus compatible with the programmatic interests of the Department of Occupational and Environmental Health. Desired qualifications include experience in the design, implementation, and evaluation of rural and agricultural health and safety programs; and demonstrated knowledge of agricultural production practices.

Foodshed Project Coordinator, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA
This position will provide coordination and support for a NIFA grant-funded project housed by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Virginia Tech. The position will generate positive, substantive impact on the development of sustainable food systems and agricultural economies in the region. Responsibilities include assisting the Program Director in coordinating communication among three (3) universities to execute the planned research and activities for community-based local food efforts; develop a framework for documentation, evaluation and analysis of information generated via meetings and research; write and proofread written correspondence, schedule meetings, make travel arrangements and assist in evaluation efforts of the initiative process overall.

Description of job responsibility/duty:
Assist the Program Director (PD) in coordinating communication among three universities to execute the planned research and activities for community-based local food efforts. Support networks for regional food systems enhancement. Communicate and maintain good relations with NGOs, small businesses, local farmers, and community members.
Develop a framework for documentation, evaluation, and analysis of information generated via meetings and research. Take notes, create timelines, keep files, and monitor deadlines and budgets, and track progress throughout the lifetime of the grant.
Write and proof written correspondence, schedule meetings, make travel arrangements, answer phone calls, and perform all other administrative duties necessary to support to the PD and ensure the flow of production and communication. Assist in evaluation efforts
of the initiative process overall.
Identify and pursue potential external funding sources that can support the research, education, and outreach mission of the grant project.
