Abstract:

The systems approach described here evolved over a ten year period in response to changes in an experimental teaching program. The experimental program began in 1966 with use of audio-tutorial (AT) units in introductory soil science. The AT program required learning objectives, and the objectives were given to the students. Additional experimentation produced a successful mastery learning program in winter 1972. When enrollment increased from 162 in winter 1972 to cover 600 in winter in 1976, emphasis in course development shifted to increase the efficiency of offering the course to larger enrollments. The result was a systems approach to teaching the course. This paper describes the learning center designed to accommodate the systems approach to teaching and the organization that evolved to increase teaching efficiency.
