Abstract:

The use of humour in instruction is as Canadian as Ukrainian summer sausage. The beginnings of Canadian humour, at least in the eyes of others, reside in the simple fact of our existence. Place names such as Medicine Hat, Moose Jaw, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Elbow, Wawa and Eyebrow, have prompted chuckles from jaded sophisticates, the world over. Moving east, locales such as Witless Bay, Punk Island, Ecum-Secum, Pugwash and institutions like the Toronto Maple Leafs (an amusing troupe of pantomimists), have prompted outright laughter.
