Abstract:

Community colleges play a major role in American higher education. Two-year colleges enrolled 43% of the nation's 12.7 million undergraduate students in fall 1989 (National Center for Educational Statistics, 1993a). Furthermore, two-year institutions accounted for 76% of the increase in undergraduate student enrollment between 1990 and 1991 (National Center for Education Statistics, 1993a).
