Abstract:

The last ten years of applying a new core curriculum to undergraduate programs has become a valuable learning experience for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, for the University of Vermont, and for other colleges and universities that are implementing, modifying, or assessing their general education requirements. Today there is a
national trend to upgrade general education throughout higher education in America. As the world becomes a more mutually dependent society in the center of massive social, political, economic, and cultural changes, higher education in America is redefining itself in general education to prepare students for the 21st century and beyond. This article
covers the ten year experience of implementation and evaluation of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences' core curriculum, the growing general education movement in America, and what we have learned that can be helpful, not only to our College and the University of Vermont, but to other colleges and universities that are modifying their general education.
